Sewers often start backing up for many different reasons. One is when tree roots break into the sewer pipes and collect debris which has been flushed down the toilet or when items that should not be flushed down get caught in the sewer lines and causes wastewater to backup. This will cause the sewer to overflow into your living space. Kitchen grease is also a hazard to sewer pipes. When grease, vegetable oils and/or liquefied fats are poured in the drains they do create issues. As the grease cools, it eventually hardens and will obstruct your pipes.
